Choosing Bedroom Furniture
The bedroom is a room where you spend a lot of time and so it makes sense to do some research to get the right furniture.
Of course if you only need temporary furniture, you may be looking at things from a different perspective than if you are kitting out your first home or just won the lottery.
If you’re at the time of your life when you want good furniture such as solid oak bedroom furniture and have a little money to spend on it, you’ll want the best pieces you can find - maybe even some designer furniture. If you are only in temporary digs, something practical and cheap may be more useful to you.
There are several things to think about when buying any kind of bedroom furniture though, whether it’s oak wardrobes or metal dressing tables. These are the price, the size of room you have, the function it needs to perform, and the style of the pieces (which will have an effect on the look of the entire room).
With any bedroom, the bed is the most important item and it is usually the largest piece of furniture too. The bed will set the tone for the rest of the room because it draws the eye. Bear this in mind when choosing. If you want a wooden four-poster that Henry VIII would have been proud to sleep in, it will obviously go with a different style of furniture than an elegant French-style metal bed. Pick carefully though because it will be expensive to re-do your bedroom. Additionally, consider if your bed needs to provide storage - if so you will probably want something with built in drawers.
As well as choosing the frame carefully, spend a good amount of time getting the right mattress. You spend a lot of your life in bed and so you will need something comfortable that will give you the right lumbar support.
The next most important thing to decide on is somewhere to put your clothes. That could be a chest of drawers, a wardrobe or both.
Some people like to watch television in bed but because the bedroom is primarily a room to calm down and sleep in, think about a unit to hide your TV away in when it is not in use.
If are short on space in your bedroom it is also worth considering a large mirror to give the illusion of more space. Make sure that it goes with the style of your room though.
If you are also kitting out a child’s room it is worth working out how long you need it to last - if you are happy to purchase new pieces fairly soon then you can concentrate on buying for your immediate situation. If you need something to last a good long time, consider how your child’s likes and dislikes will change as they get older and remember that they will be getting bigger too. Modular furniture can be great because you can add to it as you go along and alter the configuration when you want to change things about a bit.
If you are looking for styling ideas, look at a few home or interior design magazines - they will inspire you to create a bedroom you can really enjoy.
